Consider Henry Bemis' situation in the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last." Answer all of the following questions.
1. Explain irony. Give an example of an ironic situation.
2. Imagine that you were in Henry Bemis' situation. What would you have felt and done if you were the last person alive on the planet?
3. What would you do if you had all the time you needed to do whatever you wanted? Why?

1. Irony is that the end result is reversed of what was expected to happen. An ironic situation is a fireman trapped in a burning building and a little boy comes in and saves him.
2. I would've realized how desolate this world is. If that had happened to me, I would've lied on the ground and started to contemplated. In my head, I'd feel that there would be no life left in the universe. I'd feel so hopeless. I would have had fun and enjoyed my last day, as I would have killed myself at sunset.
3. If I had all this time, I probably would have played a lot of computer games. I would have done this because, now, I usually don't have time to play, even on weekends. Also, I would go to a theme park with my friends. If I was really bored, I'd look for some good books in the library. I enjoy reading, even when I could be doing something else. When everything would be done, I'd try to solve a Rubik's Cube, or do some tricks on my old yo-yo.
Irony is a concept where something unexpected, or opposite of what is expected happens. One example is in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” The animals started their own establishment that they dreamed would be quite different from the humans’ ways. Instead, the animals created an establishment that was exactly like the humans’, just in a farm setting versus a world setting.
If I were Henry Bemis, I would’ve felt extremely excited at first. I would’ve immediately done what I had always wanted to do, but wasn’t allowed to do. In Henry Bemis’ case, it was reading. But similar to Henry Bemis, I would’ve began to feel lonely, frightened, and apprehensive about the future and the thought of being alone for an infinite amount of time to do just the one thing that I had been deterred from doing right before the bomb exploded. Like anyone, I would probably go insane after while.
If I had all the time I needed to do what I wanted, I would study and practice music. Every day, I feel like there’s never enough time to get everything I want to get done. In modern society, students, especially in this area, are under extreme pressures to study hard and get good grades, along with a copious amount of extracurricular activities. Due to strict “Asian” parents, I fit in this categorization. Therefore, I have only minimal time to listen to classical music, analyze it, practice piano, and read about classical music, take seminars, go to lessons, and compose. I would use my infinite time to do this because I know that this is what I will do for the rest of my life.
